Area of Science:

  • Psychiatry
  • Clinical Psychology
  • Pharmacology

Background:

  • Generalized social phobia is a debilitating condition impacting social interactions.
  • Effective pharmacological treatments for social phobia are crucial for improving patient outcomes.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy and tolerability of sertraline in patients diagnosed with generalized social phobia.
  • To determine optimal dosage and treatment duration for sertraline in this population.

Main Methods:

  • An open-label study involving eleven consecutive patients diagnosed with generalized social phobia.
  • Treatment with sertraline, with dosage titration up to 200 mg daily over 12 weeks.
  • Assessment of treatment response and side effects in completers and dropouts.

Main Results:

  • Seven patients completed the 12-week treatment period.
  • Five of the seven completers demonstrated substantial improvement, particularly after two weeks at 100 mg/day sertraline.
  • The average final dose for responders was 170 mg/day, with minimal side effects reported by completers.

Conclusions:

  • Sertraline appears to be an effective treatment for generalized social phobia in a majority of patients.
  • Further research with larger sample sizes and control groups is warranted to confirm these findings.
  • Tolerability was generally good among patients who completed the study.
