Inner ear damage from pressure changes can cause hearing loss and vertigo. While surgery resolved vertigo in some patients, it did not restore hearing function.

Background:

  • Inner ear disorders, including hearing loss and vertigo, can result from pressure-induced trauma.
  • Pressure changes can stem from atmospheric variations (diving, air travel), rapid ear pressure shifts (nose blowing, lifting), or blast injuries.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To analyze the audiometric patterns and surgical outcomes in patients with inner ear dysfunction caused by pressure changes.
  • To compare the effects of different pressure change etiologies on hearing and vestibular function.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective review of 136 patients with pressure-induced inner ear disorders.
  • Classification into three groups based on etiology: atmospheric pressure change, rapid ear pressure change, and blast injury.
  • Analysis of audiogram types and surgical outcomes (exploratory tympanotomy) in a subset of patients.

  • A flat audiogram was most common in atmospheric and rapid ear pressure change groups.
  • High-tone hearing loss was predominant in the blast injury group.
