Technical note. Sagittal tomography as an adjunct to cross-sectional evaluation of select implant sites

Objective:
To supplement conventional cross-sectional tomography with a sagittal projection in order to verify the location of vital anatomical structures prior to dental implant surgery.
Methods:
A method is described that illustrates the theory, technique and benefits of incorporating sagittal tomography into the radiographic examination of a dental implant patient.
Results:
Local variations in the inferior-superior position of the mandibular canal or encroachment of the sinus on areas immediately adjacent to the proposed maxillary implant site can be demonstrated.
Conclusions:
The additional information gained from sagittal tomography aids the clinician in appreciating the orientation and morphology of the anatomical area under examination.
