Summary

Early oral feeding after colorectal surgery is safe and well-tolerated. While it did not significantly shorten hospital stays, it offers a safe alternative to traditional feeding methods.

Background:

Routine nasogastric decompression post-abdominal surgery is often unnecessary.
Recent studies suggest early oral feeding is safe after surgery.
Investigating early feeding's impact on hospitalization duration and cost-effectiveness.

Purpose of the Study:

To test if early feeding shortens hospitalization after colorectal surgery.
To evaluate the cost-effectiveness of early feeding protocols.
To assess the safety and tolerance of early oral intake.

Main Methods:

Prospective randomized trial with 58 patients undergoing elective colorectal surgery.
Early Feeding (EF) group: initiated diet on postoperative day 1.

Main Results:

No significant difference in length of hospital stay (EF: 7.2 days vs. TF: 8.1 days).
Similar rates of nausea between groups; vomiting slightly higher in EF group.

Conclusions:

Early oral feeding is a safe postoperative strategy for elective colorectal surgery.
Early feeding did not significantly reduce hospitalization duration in this study.
Further research may explore optimizing early feeding protocols for enhanced benefits.
