Topical antimicrobial prophylaxis in minor wounds

Summary

A new antimicrobial gel containing cetrimide, bacitracin, and polymyxin B sulfate effectively prevented clinical infections in minor wounds. This topical treatment significantly reduced infection rates compared to placebo in a school setting.

Background:

Minor wounds are common in children, posing a risk of infection.
Effective topical antimicrobial prophylaxis is crucial for preventing wound complications.

Purpose of the Study:

To evaluate a novel topical antimicrobial gel containing cetrimide, bacitracin, and polymyxin B sulfate for preventing infections in minor wounds.
To compare its efficacy against placebo and povidone iodine antiseptic cream.

Main Methods:

A prospective clinical trial was conducted in five primary schools in Sydney, Australia.
Children aged 5-12 years with minor accidental injuries were treated with the test gel, placebo, or povidone iodine.
Wound outcomes were assessed after 3 days for clinical and microbiologic infection.

The novel gel significantly reduced the incidence of clinical infections from 12.5% to 1.6% (p < 0.05).
No significant differences in microbiologic infections were observed among the treatment groups (p > 0.05).

Conclusions:

The novel antimicrobial gel demonstrated therapeutic action in reducing clinical infections in minor accidental wounds.
This preparation may be a suitable option for first-aid wound prophylaxis.
