Summary

Risperidone improved verbal working memory in schizophrenia patients more than haloperidol. This suggests new antipsychotics may enhance cognitive function beyond symptom reduction.

Area of Science:

  • Neuroscience
  • Psychiatry
  • Pharmacology

Background:

  • Schizophrenia treatment traditionally focuses on symptom reduction.
  • Neurocognitive deficits are a significant aspect of disability in schizophrenia.
  • Newer antipsychotics may offer benefits beyond symptom control, potentially impacting cognitive function.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the effects of risperidone on verbal working memory in patients with schizophrenia.
  • To compare risperidone's efficacy against haloperidol concerning verbal working memory.

Main Methods:

  • A randomized, double-blind study involving 59 treatment-resistant schizophrenia patients.
  • Verbal working memory was assessed under distracting and non-distracting conditions.
  • Measurements were taken at baseline and after 4 weeks of fixed- and flexible-dose treatment.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • Risperidone demonstrated a superior beneficial effect on verbal working memory compared to haloperidol.
  • This improvement was observed across different testing conditions and treatment phases.
  • The positive effect on memory was independent of benztropine cotreatment and changes in psychotic or negative symptoms.

Conclusions:

  • Risperidone shows a more favorable impact on verbal working memory than conventional neuroleptics.
  • The drug's effect may be partly due to direct action, potentially via 5-HT2A receptor antagonism.
  • Schizophrenia treatment efficacy should consider improvements in neurocognitive abilities alongside symptom reduction.
