Benign recurrent intrahepatic cholestasis (BRIC) is a rare liver disorder. This case report details a Taiwanese boy

Area of Science:

  • Hepatology
  • Gastroenterology

Background:

  • Benign recurrent intrahepatic cholestasis (BRIC) is a rare liver disorder characterized by intermittent cholestasis.
  • Its etiology remains largely unknown, and it has not been previously documented in Taiwan.

Observation:

  • A 17-year-old Taiwanese male presented with recurrent episodes of pruritus and jaundice over several years.
  • Each episode lasted 3-4 months, with spontaneous resolution and symptom-free intervals.
  • A liver biopsy showed hepatocellular and canalicular cholestasis.

Findings:

  • The patient exhibited direct hyperbilirubinemia during episodes.
  • Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography revealed normal intra- and extrahepatic biliary anatomy.
  • Diagnosis of BRIC was confirmed after excluding other causes of jaundice.

Related Experiment Videos

Implications:

  • This case represents the first reported instance of BRIC in Taiwan.
  • Highlights the importance of considering BRIC in patients with recurrent cholestasis, even in previously unreported regions.
  • Contributes to the understanding of BRIC's clinical presentation and diagnostic criteria.
