Summary

Repeat hospital admissions for Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) are common. Older patients with recurrent depression, personality disorders, or medical conditions are more likely to be readmitted.

Area of Science:

  • Psychiatry
  • Clinical Psychology
  • Epidemiology

Background:

  • Recidivism in psychotic disorders is well-documented.
  • Limited research exists on readmission differences in Major Depressive Disorder (MDD).

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare characteristics of patients with Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) admitted once versus multiple times.
  • To identify factors associated with repeat hospitalizations for MDD.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective review of patient records (1991-1995) at a military medical center.
  • Comparison of 46 MDD recidivists (≥3 admissions) with 50 first-time admitted patients.
  • Analysis of age, gender, comorbidity, and contributing medical conditions.

Main Results:

  • Repeat admissions for MDD were frequent.
  • Recidivists were older, more likely to have recurrent depression, personality disorders, or medical comorbidities.
  • Alcohol use disorders or other Axis I disorders did not predict recidivism.

Conclusions:

  • The morbidity of MDD, indicated by frequent admissions, can be substantial.
  • Recurrent MDD, potentially with co-occurring personality disorders, may drive frequent hospitalizations.
