Summary

Tobacco use among young Norwegians declined in the 1960s-70s but plateaued in the 1980s. Recent years show increased smoking in 16-19 year olds, with prevalence in 1995 similar to the early 1980s.

Area of Science:

  • Public Health
  • Epidemiology
  • Tobacco Control

Background:

  • Tobacco use trends in young adults are critical indicators of future public health challenges.
  • Understanding temporal patterns in smoking and snuff use is essential for targeted interventions.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To describe the prevalence of tobacco use among young Norwegian adults between 1973 and 1995.
  • To analyze trends and identify shifts in tobacco consumption patterns within this demographic.

Main Methods:

  • Utilized cross-sectional personal and telephone surveys.
  • Data collected from population-based samples of Norwegians aged 16-74 years.
  • Study conducted in Norway spanning the period 1973-1995.

Main Results:

Related Experiment Videos

  • A decline in tobacco use among young Norwegians observed in the 1960s and 1970s leveled out during the 1980s.
  • Total smoking prevalence in Norway decreased by only two percentage points from 1980 to 1993, contrasting with ~10 percentage points in other European countries.
  • Recent years show an increase in smoking prevalence and snuff use (males) in the 16-19 age group, with 1995 prevalence comparable to the early 1980s.

Conclusions:

  • Observed tobacco use trends suggest underutilization of preventive measures, particularly health education.
  • A significant 90% reduction in financial resources for health education and information during the 1980s likely contributed to the plateauing trends.
  • The findings highlight the need for sustained and robust investment in public health initiatives to curb youth tobacco use.
