Summary

Many patients are open to same-day discharge after posterior segment eye surgery. However, home support and patient anxiety significantly impact their decision, not clinical factors.

Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Patient Care

Background:

  • Day care is standard for anterior segment eye surgeries.
  • The feasibility of day care for posterior segment eye surgeries was explored at Rotterdam Eye Hospital.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess patient opinions on same-day discharge after posterior segment eye surgery.
  • To identify factors influencing patient willingness to go home after surgery.

Main Methods:

  • A questionnaire was administered to patients undergoing posterior segment eye surgery.
  • Patients were asked about their perceived ability to go home post-surgery and potential organizational/anxiety issues.

Main Results:

  • 56% of respondents felt capable of same-day discharge post-surgery.
  • Organizational challenges at home and patient anxiety were significantly associated with a negative response regarding same-day discharge.
  • Clinical factors including age, ASA class, diabetes, anesthesia type, surgery timing/duration, and post-operative symptoms (pain, nausea, dizziness) did not show significant correlations.

Conclusions:

  • Patient willingness for same-day discharge after posterior segment eye surgery is influenced by psychosocial factors like home support and anxiety.
  • Clinical characteristics do not appear to be primary determinants of patient preference for same-day discharge in this study.
  • Further research with larger cohorts is needed to confirm findings in specific patient subgroups.
