Area of Science:

  • Reproductive Medicine
  • Diagnostic Imaging

Background:

  • Testicular microlithiasis (TM) is a rare condition characterized by the presence of small calcifications within the seminiferous tubules.
  • It is frequently diagnosed incidentally during scrotal ultrasound examinations, often in the context of male infertility investigations.

Observation:

  • A case study of a 28-year-old male presenting with infertility is detailed.
  • Ultrasound revealed bilateral testicular microlithiasis, characterized by hyperechoic foci without acoustic shadowing in normal testicular parenchyma.

Findings:

  • Hormonal analysis showed elevated follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH) with low testosterone levels.
  • Semen analysis indicated azoospermia, a complete absence of sperm.

Related Experiment Videos

Implications:

  • TM has a distinct ultrasonographic appearance, negating the need for further diagnostic imaging.
  • The pathogenesis and clinical significance of TM are not fully understood, necessitating evaluation for associated conditions such as tumors, infertility, systemic diseases, and chromosomal abnormalities.
  • Regular ultrasound follow-up is recommended for patients diagnosed with testicular microlithiasis.
