Summary

Primary biliary cirrhosis patients with dry mouth (xerostomia) frequently experience swallowing difficulties (dysphagia). This study highlights a significant association between xerostomia and dysphagia in this patient group.

Area of Science:

  • Gastroenterology
  • Hepatology
  • Otolaryngology

Background:

  • Primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC) is a chronic liver disease.
  • Sicca complex, characterized by dry mouth (xerostomia) and dry eyes, can affect PBC patients.
  • Swallowing problems are a potential complication that requires investigation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the prevalence and characteristics of swallowing problems in patients with primary biliary cirrhosis.
  • To determine the association between xerostomia and dysphagia in PBC patients.
  • To explore other related symptoms such as hoarseness, coughing, and wheezing.

Main Methods:

  • A prospective study involving 95 consecutive primary biliary cirrhosis patients.
  • Telephone-administered questionnaire to assess symptoms.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Multivariate logistic regression analysis to control for confounding factors.
  • Main Results:

    • 68.4% of PBC patients reported sicca complex symptoms; 47.4% had subjective xerostomia.
    • Dysphagia was significantly more common in patients with xerostomia (21/45) compared to those without (6/50).
    • Hoarseness, coughing, and wheezing were also more frequent in xerostomia patients.

    Conclusions:

    • Subjective xerostomia is common in primary biliary cirrhosis.
    • Dysphagia is a frequent swallowing problem associated with xerostomia in PBC patients.
    • These findings suggest a link between dry mouth and swallowing dysfunction in PBC.
