Area of Science:

  • Cardiology
  • Cardiac Surgery
  • Medical Devices

Background:

  • Left ventricular (LV) aneurysms are serious conditions affecting heart function.
  • Surgical repair is crucial for managing LV aneurysms and improving patient outcomes.
  • LV endoaneurysmorrhaphy is an emerging technique for addressing these cardiac defects.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy and safety of LV endoaneurysmorrhaphy for surgical repair of LV aneurysms.
  • To assess the impact of the procedure on LV geometry and ejection fraction.
  • To determine the operative risk and long-term outcomes associated with LV endoaneurysmorrhaphy.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective analysis of 45 patients undergoing LV endoaneurysmorrhaphy between 1991 and 1995.
  • Assessment of preoperative and postoperative LV function using echocardiography.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Monitoring of operative mortality, need for circulatory support, and long-term follow-up.
  • Main Results:

    • The primary indication for surgery was angina pectoris (71%).
    • Operative mortality was low at 2.2%, with 31% requiring pharmacologic and 15% mechanical support.
    • Mean ejection fraction improved significantly from 29.6% to 48.3% (p <0.001), and LV end-diastolic volumes decreased.

    Conclusions:

    • LV endoaneurysmorrhaphy effectively improves LV geometry and function in patients with LV aneurysms.
    • The procedure is associated with a low surgical risk, even in patients with large aneurysms and severely depressed LV function.
    • This surgical technique demonstrates excellent results and warrants consideration for LV aneurysm repair.
