Summary

Cataract surgery significantly improves high-pass resolution perimetry results. Low-grade cataracts (visual acuity > or = 0.3) show an average 1 dB improvement, aiding visual field defect assessment.

Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Visual Science

Background:

  • Cataracts are a leading cause of visual impairment.
  • High-pass resolution perimetry is a sensitive measure of visual function.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the impact of cataract on high-pass resolution perimetry.
  • To quantify visual field changes before and after cataract surgery.

Main Methods:

  • Twenty-five healthy patients underwent high-pass resolution perimetry preoperatively and postoperatively.
  • Patients had varying degrees of cataract, with visual acuities from 0.1 to 0.8.

Main Results:

  • Preoperative perimetry revealed elevated thresholds and localized visual field defects in patients with cataracts.
  • Post-surgery, mean perimetric results improved by approximately 1 dB for low-grade cataracts (VA 0.3-0.65).
  • Higher opacity cataracts (VA 0.1-0.25) showed a wider range of improvement (1.4-6.2 dB).

Conclusions:

  • Cataracts induce diverse visual field defects.
  • A 1 dB adjustment can compensate for general threshold increases caused by low-grade cataracts, improving visual field assessment accuracy.
