Self-development for women in the NHS

Training in the NHS in many careers, including nursing, does not routinely include preparation for management. This article looks at how a group of women in different disciplines in one NHS trust used the Astra programme from the equal opportunities unit at the NHS Executive as a means of developing their managerial careers. After taking part in the four-month programme, participants reported greater self-confidence, increased assertiveness and a greater sense of clarity about this career development.
