Summary

Type-1 latex allergy is common in children with spina bifida. In atopic children, latex allergy is linked to food allergies, particularly to bananas. Standardized prick-tests are recommended for diagnosis.

Area of Science:

  • Pediatric Allergy and Immunology
  • Immunology
  • Dermatology

Background:

  • Type-1 latex allergy is a significant health concern, with over a thousand reported cases.
  • It is particularly prevalent in children diagnosed with spina bifida.
  • Atopic individuals may represent an underrecognized group susceptible to latex allergy.

Observation:

  • This study presents six cases of type-1 latex allergy in atopic children.
  • Five of these children also exhibited food allergies, with a notable association with banana allergy.
  • The observed allergies were confirmed through various diagnostic methods, including prick testing, latex histamine release (LHR) testing, and specific IgE measurement.

Findings:

  • A significant correlation exists between atopy, food allergies (especially to banana), and type-1 latex allergy in pediatric cases.
  • Standardized prick testing using latex extracts is identified as the preferred diagnostic method.
  • The study highlights the need for increased awareness and diagnostic vigilance for latex allergy in atopic children.

Implications:

  • Healthcare providers should intensify screening for latex allergy in atopic children, considering potential co-existing food allergies.
  • Avoidance of latex-containing products such as pacifiers, toys, and balloons is crucial for affected children.
  • Further research into the immunological mechanisms underlying latex and food allergies in atopic populations is warranted.
