Summary

Roller-skating accidents are common, frequently occurring on public roads and often resulting in upper extremity fractures, particularly of the forearm. Protective gear and designated skating areas are recommended to prevent these injuries.

Area of Science:

  • Orthopedics
  • Traumatology
  • Sports Medicine

Context:

  • Roller-skating has gained popularity, leading to an increase in associated injuries.
  • Accidents are frequently occurring on public roads, posing a significant risk to skaters.

Purpose:

  • To investigate the incidence and types of roller-skating accidents.
  • To identify the most common anatomical areas affected by roller-skating injuries.
  • To determine the severity and treatment required for these injuries.

Summary:

  • A study of 389 roller-skating injuries between 1995 and 1996 revealed that 59% of accidents occurred on public roads.
  • Fractures accounted for 174 injuries (45%), with 68% involving the forearm or distal radius/ulna, and 89% affecting the upper extremity.
  • Thirty-three patients required hospital admission for observation (concussion), fracture reduction and casting, or osteosynthesis.

Impact:

  • Findings highlight the high frequency of roller-skating accidents and the prevalence of upper extremity fractures.
  • The study underscores the need for preventative measures, including the use of protective equipment and the establishment of dedicated skating facilities.
  • This research informs public health initiatives and safety guidelines for roller-skating participants.
