Background:

  • Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection is a potential cause of lymphoid malignancies, including non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) and Waldenström's macroglobulinemia (WM).
  • The association between HCV and B cell malignancy (BCM) requires further investigation in diverse populations.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the relationship between HCV infection and BCM in a Japanese cohort.
  • To determine the prevalence of HCV-RNA and its genotypes in patients diagnosed with BCM.

Main Methods:

  • Analyzed HCV-RNA in 50 patients with BCM (25 NHL, 4 WM, 21 multiple myeloma).
  • Determined HCV genotypes using reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR).
  • Compared HCV prevalence in BCM patients to a control group of 18 patients with non-B cell NHL and healthy blood donors (approx. 1% prevalence).

Main Results:

  • Eight (16.0%) of 50 BCM patients tested positive for HCV-RNA, significantly higher than the control group and healthy donors.
  • HCV-RNA was detected in 16.0% of B cell NHL, 25.0% of WM, and 14.3% of multiple myeloma cases.
  • HCV genotypes II, III, and IV were identified across the BCM patient groups.

Conclusions:

  • Persistent HCV infection is associated with an increased risk of developing B cell malignancies.
  • The findings suggest a potential etiological role for HCV in the pathogenesis of BCM.
  • Further research is warranted to elucidate the mechanisms underlying this association.
