Inositol prevents expression of a genetic model of neural tube defects in mice
Nutrition Reviews
|May 1, 1997
Abstract:
Although up to 70% of neural tube defects (NTDs) can be prevented by adequate folate consumption, some NTDs are unrelated to folate, myo-inositol was found to reduce the incidence of spinal NTDs that are unrelated to folate in curly tail mice.
Insights
Myo-inositol supplementation may reduce neural tube defects (NTDs) not preventable by folate. This study investigated its potential in preventing folate-unrelated NTDs in mice, offering new insights into NTD prevention strategies.
Area of Science:
- Developmental biology
- Neuroscience
- Nutritional science
Background:
- Neural tube defects (NTDs) are serious birth defects.
- Folate supplementation prevents up to 70% of NTDs.
- Some NTDs are not responsive to folate, indicating other causative factors.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the efficacy of myo-inositol in preventing folate-unrelated NTDs.
- To explore novel therapeutic targets for NTD prevention.
Main Methods:
- Utilized the curly tail mouse model, a known model for NTDs.
- Administered myo-inositol during critical developmental periods.
- Assessed the incidence of spinal NTDs in treated and control groups.
Main Results:
- Myo-inositol significantly reduced the incidence of spinal NTDs in the curly tail mouse model.
- The observed reduction was specific to NTDs not linked to folate deficiency.
Conclusions:
- Myo-inositol shows promise as a preventative agent for certain types of NTDs.
- This finding suggests a potential new strategy for addressing folate-resistant NTDs.
