Background:

Maternal health and socioeconomic factors significantly influence infant birth weight.
Understanding birth weight trends is crucial for assessing population health and developmental outcomes.

Purpose of the Study:

To analyze recent trends in birth weight in Hong Kong.
To identify changes in maternal and infant characteristics over two decades.

Main Methods:

Analysis of 10,512 confinements from 1985-86 and 7,857 from 1995-96.
Statistical comparison of maternal demographics (height, weight, age, BMI, parity) and infant sex between the two periods.

Main Results:

Significant increases in maternal height, weight, and age were observed.

Maternal body-mass index slightly decreased, while parity significantly increased.

No significant difference in mean birth weights was found between the two periods, with a trivial 15g increase over time after controlling for covariates.

Conclusions:

Birth weight in Hong Kong has plateaued, irrespective of rising socioeconomic status and improved nutrition.
Maternal and infant characteristics have changed, but these did not translate to altered birth weights.
