Summary

Granulocytic sarcomas with monocytic morphology, previously unreported, were found to have the t(9;11) abnormality. This finding aids in precise characterization and therapy selection for myeloid leukemia.

Area of Science:

  • Hematology
  • Oncology
  • Cytogenetics

Background:

  • Granulocytic sarcomas are localized myeloid leukemia cell deposits.
  • Typically, they exhibit morphology of AML-M2 with t(8;21) or AML-M4 with inv(16).

Observation:

  • This study reports two cases of granulocytic sarcoma with monocytic morphology.
  • The malignant cells in these cases displayed the t(9;11)(p22;q23) chromosomal abnormality.

Findings:

  • The t(9;11) abnormality, characteristic of AML-M5, has not been previously reported in granulocytic sarcoma.
  • This cytogenetic finding is observed in up to 7% of childhood acute myeloid leukemia (AML).

Implications:

  • Detection of t(9;11) in granulocytic sarcoma allows precise characterization of malignant cells.

Related Experiment Videos
