Area of Science:

  • Medical Education
  • Health Systems Management
  • Primary Care Physician Training

Background:

  • Increasing demand for primary care physicians necessitates strategic planning in academic general internal medicine (GIM).
  • GIM divisions require effective methods to develop future roles and meet physician training needs.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To outline a strategic planning process for academic GIM divisions to address physician training demands.
  • To develop an ideal and recommended work system for a GIM division.

Main Methods:

  • Utilized the IDEALS systems design as a conceptual framework.
  • Employed the Delphi technique with division faculty, literature review, and administrators to define an ideal work system.
  • Applied the Nominal Group Process Technique to the Delphi results to establish a recommended work system.

Main Results:

  • The strategic planning process was found to be economical.
  • Division faculty perceived the process as useful.
  • A theoretically ideal work system and a recommended work system were developed.

Conclusions:

  • The described strategic planning process effectively engaged stakeholders and yielded practical outcomes.
  • This approach offers a viable model for GIM divisions aiming to enhance physician training strategies.
  • The methodology proved efficient and valuable for faculty involved in the planning.
