Summary

A rare TSH-producing pituitary adenoma caused hyperthyroidism in a male patient. Surgical removal resolved symptoms and normalized thyroid hormone levels, eliminating the need for medication.

Background:

  • Thyrotropin-producing pituitary adenomas are rare causes of hyperthyroidism.
  • Patients often present with symptoms of hyperthyroidism and goiter, unresponsive to standard treatments.

Observation:

  • A 58-year-old male with a 9-year history of hyperthyroidism, goiter, and atrial fibrillation was diagnosed with a 9mm pituitary adenoma.
  • Elevated thyroid hormones with inadequately high TSH levels were noted.
  • The patient had been treated with antithyroid drugs for nine years without resolution.

Findings:

  • Transsphenoidal resection of the pituitary adenoma was performed.
  • Histological examination confirmed a TSH-producing adenoma.
  • Post-surgery, the patient experienced complete symptom resolution and normalized TSH and thyroid hormone levels.
