Summary

This study identified key risk factors for adenomyosis, a condition affecting 21.2% of women undergoing hysterectomy. Parity and spontaneous abortions increased adenomyosis risk, while smoking appeared to be protective.

Area of Science:

  • Gynecology
  • Reproductive Health
  • Epidemiology

Background:

  • Adenomyosis is a common gynecological condition.
  • Understanding its risk factors is crucial for diagnosis and management.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate potential risk factors associated with adenomyosis.
  • To analyze the relationship between smoking, parity, and spontaneous abortions and adenomyosis.

Main Methods:

  • A cohort of 707 women undergoing hysterectomy were interviewed pre-surgery.
  • Adenomyosis diagnosis was confirmed via pathological records.
  • Statistical analysis was performed to determine odds ratios for various risk factors.

Main Results:

  • Adenomyosis was identified in 150 subjects (21.2%).

Related Experiment Videos

  • Increased parity (1.8 for one birth, 3.1 for two or more) and spontaneous abortions (1.7) were significantly associated with higher adenomyosis risk.
  • Current smokers showed a trend towards decreased risk (OR 0.7), with risk decreasing as cigarette consumption increased.
  • Conclusions:

    • Parity and a history of spontaneous abortions are significant risk factors for adenomyosis.
    • Smoking may have a protective effect against adenomyosis.
    • Further research is warranted to elucidate the mechanisms behind these associations.
