Semen volume and total motile sperm count increased in young sperm donors over 15 years, while normal morphology declined. These changes in semen parameters were independent of age and abstinence duration.

Purpose of the Study:

To evaluate changes in semen quality and quantity over a 15-year period.
To analyze trends in semen parameters among young, healthy sperm donors in Jerusalem.

Main Methods:

Retrospective analysis of semen parameters from 1980 to 1995.
Involved 188 healthy medical students (aged 20-30) at a single tertiary university sperm bank.
Linear regression analysis was used to assess trends.

No significant changes in semen concentration or motility were observed.
Mean semen volume increased by 0.1 ml/year (5.1% increase).
Total motile sperm count rose by 5.8 x 10^6/year (7.7% increase).
Percentage of normal sperm morphology decreased by 1.04% per year.

Conclusions:

Total motile sperm count increased due to higher semen volume.
A decline in normal sperm morphology was noted.
These trends were independent of donor age and duration of abstinence.
