Insights
Transluminal angioplasty effectively treated severe stenosis in brain arteries unresponsive to medication. This minimally invasive technique showed excellent clinical outcomes in three patients, warranting further investigation.
Area of Science:
- Neurology
- Cardiovascular Medicine
- Interventional Radiology
Background:
- Atherosclerotic stenosis in intracranial vertebral and basilar arteries can cause severe neurological symptoms.
- Antithrombotic therapy is often insufficient for managing symptomatic intracranial artery stenosis.
Observation:
- Three patients with frequent, therapy-resistant symptoms due to tight atherosclerotic stenosis of the basilar or intracranial vertebral arteries were treated.
- Transluminal angioplasty was successfully employed in these challenging cases.
Findings:
- Excellent clinical results were achieved following transluminal angioplasty.
- The mean follow-up period was 24 months, demonstrating sustained benefits.
Implications:
- Transluminal angioplasty represents a promising new technique for treating symptomatic intracranial atherosclerotic stenosis.
- Larger studies are needed to confirm the efficacy and safety of this interventional approach.
Abstract:
This report describes the successful use of transluminal angioplasty for tight atherosclerotic stenosis of the basilar or intra-cranial vertebral arteries in three patients presenting frequent symptoms that were unresponsive to antithrombotic therapy. Excellent clinical results have been obtained with a mean follow-up of 24 months. Larger studies are warranted to confirm efficacy and safety of this new technic.
