    Summary

    This study investigated potassium uptake in guinea pig sinus nodes using nicotinic drugs. Results suggest a nicotinic receptor mediates acetylcholine's inhibitory effect on potassium uptake.

    Background:

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the role of nicotinic receptors in regulating potassium (K) uptake in the guinea pig sinus node.
    • To determine the effects of various nicotinic agonists and antagonists on K uptake.

    Main Methods:

    • In vitro perfusion of guinea pig sinus node.
    • Measurement of potassium uptake in the presence and absence of nicotinic compounds.
    • Utilized acetylcholine, nicotine, DMPP, TMPA, atropine, hexamethonium, and decamethonium.

    Conclusions:

    • A nicotinic receptor in the sinus node is responsible for the inhibitory action of low-concentration acetylcholine on potassium uptake.
    • These findings elucidate the specific receptor interactions influencing sinus node function.
