Area of Science:

  • Infectious Diseases
  • Bacteriology
  • Otolaryngology

Background:

  • Pasteurella multocida commonly colonizes animal nasopharynx and gastrointestinal tracts.
  • Human infections typically arise from animal bites, with respiratory tract infections being second most common.
  • Acute epiglottitis is a rare but serious upper airway infection.

Observation:

  • This report details the third known case of acute Pasteurella multocida epiglottitis.
  • Transmission occurred via inhalation of infectious nasopharyngeal secretions from cats.
  • The patient presented with symptoms of acute epiglottitis.

Findings:

  • The patient's epiglottitis was diagnosed as Pasteurella multocida infection.
  • Penicillin, the recommended treatment for P. multocida, was administered.
  • The patient showed a positive response to penicillin treatment.

Implications:

  • Pasteurella multocida should be considered in the differential diagnosis of acute epiglottitis.
  • Cat exposure is a potential risk factor for P. multocida epiglottitis.
  • Early diagnosis and appropriate antibiotic treatment are crucial for favorable outcomes.
