Summary

Microvascular free flaps are effective for reconstructing large skull base tumors after surgery or radiotherapy. This study shows a low flap failure rate and manageable local recurrence in 23 patients.

Background:

  • Large vault and skull base tumors often necessitate wide surgical excision.
  • Reconstruction following such extensive resections typically involves microvascular free tissue transfer (free flap).

Observation:

  • This study evaluated 23 patients who underwent reconstruction with free flaps for large vault or skull base tumors.
  • Eight patients had prior surgery elsewhere, and seven had recurrent disease post-radiotherapy.

Findings:

  • The study reported a single flap failure (1/23).
  • A local recurrence rate of 16% (3/19) was observed in evaluable cases.
  • At a mean follow-up of 29 months, 19 patients were alive, with four deaths.
