Area of Science:

  • Medical Physics
  • Radiotherapy Technology
  • Medical Imaging

Background:

  • Accurate dose calculation in total body irradiation (TBI) requires comprehensive whole-body anatomical data.
  • Existing radiotherapy treatment planning systems lack dedicated tools for generating TBI-specific anatomical parameters.
  • Current methods may not adequately capture the necessary anthropometrical information for TBI.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop and describe a novel anthropometrical computerised system for TBI dose calculation.
  • To enable the generation of essential anatomical parameters for a PC-based TBI planning system.
  • To improve the accuracy and efficiency of TBI treatment planning.

Main Methods:

  • The system utilizes video image grabbing technology to acquire external patient images in the treatment position.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Software controls image acquisition, digitalization, and measurement procedures.
  • Measurements can be performed on digital CT data or directly on the acquired external images.
  • Main Results:

    • The system successfully generates an ASCII file containing crucial parameters for TBI dose calculation.
    • Key parameters include depth, backscatter tissue thickness, inhomogeneity thickness, off-axis distance (OAD), and source to skin distance (SSD).
    • The generated data is directly readable by the TBI planning system.

    Conclusions:

    • The developed anthropometrical system effectively provides necessary anatomical data for TBI planning.
    • This facilitates more accurate and reliable dose calculations in total body irradiation.
    • The system represents a significant advancement for PC-based TBI treatment planning.
