    Area of Science:

    • Ophthalmology
    • Trauma Surgery

    Background:

    • Traumatic cataracts are a significant cause of vision loss, particularly in younger individuals.
    • Surgical outcomes for traumatic cataracts can be variable depending on injury severity and patient age.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the visual results following surgical removal of traumatic cataracts.
    • To identify factors influencing visual outcomes in patients with traumatic cataracts.

    Main Methods:

    • Retrospective analysis of 90 eyes undergoing surgery for traumatic cataract removal.
    • Assessment of visual acuity as the primary outcome measure.

    Main Results:

    • 54% of eyes achieved a visual acuity of 20/80 or better.
    • 42% achieved excellent corrected acuity (20/20 to 20/30).
    • Poor outcomes were more common in cases with extensive preoperative trauma or visual immaturity.

    Conclusions:

    • Surgical cataract removal can restore good vision in a majority of traumatic cataract cases.
    • Preoperative trauma severity and patient age are critical determinants of visual prognosis.
