Summary

Short-term pocket distention significantly improves subgingival calculus removal during root planing. Using a gingival retraction cord, with or without aluminum sulfate, is more effective than root planing alone for deep pockets.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy of root planing after short-term pocket distention.
  • To compare calculus removal with and without gingival retraction cords.
  • To determine the effect of aluminum sulfate in retraction cords on calculus removal.

Main Methods:

  • Seventy-five teeth with probing depths of 5-10 mm were divided into three groups.
  • Groups 1 and 2 used aluminum sulfate-impregnated and non-impregnated cords, respectively, for 30 minutes before scaling and root planing.

  • Residual calculus was quantified using computerized image analysis after extraction.

    • Overall, 46.3% of root surfaces had residual calculus (mean 4.41%).

    • No significant difference in calculus removal was observed between the impregnated and non-impregnated cords.

    Conclusions:

    • Short-term pocket distention using gingival retraction cords enhances subgingival calculus removal during root planing.
    • The presence of aluminum sulfate in retraction cords does not provide additional benefit for calculus removal.
    • These findings suggest improved access and effectiveness in deep periodontal pockets with this technique.
