Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Infectious Diseases
  • Microbiology

Background:

  • Preseptal cellulitis is an infection of the eyelid and periorbital tissues.
  • The clinical course can vary based on patient age, etiology, and causative organisms.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To document cases of preseptal cellulitis.
  • To identify common causative organisms.
  • To assess treatment outcomes and complications.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective case documentation of 14 patients with preseptal cellulitis.
  • Age range: 2 to 55 years.
  • Microbiological analysis to identify causative organisms.

Main Results:

  • Staphylococcus aureus was the most frequently isolated organism (7 cases).

Related Experiment Videos

  • Streptococcus pyogenes (2 cases) and Pseudomonas aeruginosa (1 case) were also identified.
  • Four patients had no organism identified.
  • 10 out of 14 patients were cured within 6 weeks.
  • Complications included lagophthalmos, lid abscess, cicatricial ectropion, and lid necrosis in one patient each.
  • Conclusions:

    • Preseptal cellulitis generally has a favorable prognosis with appropriate antibiotic therapy.
    • Early diagnosis and treatment are crucial for preventing complications.
    • Surgical intervention may be necessary in complicated cases.
