Area of Science:

  • Neurology
  • Gastroenterology

Background:

  • Parkinson's disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disorder affecting motor function.
  • Swallowing difficulties (dysphagia) are a common complication in Parkinson's disease.
  • The impact of dysphagia on nutritional status in PD requires further investigation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the prevalence of dysphagia in Parkinson's disease patients.
  • To assess the relationship between dysphagia and nutritional status in Parkinson's disease.
  • To identify predictors of dysphagia in Parkinson's disease.

Main Methods:

  • A cohort of 53 patients with Parkinson's disease was evaluated.
  • Dysphagia was assessed in all participants.
  • Nutritional status was compared to age- and sex-matched controls.

Main Results:

  • 81% of Parkinson's disease patients experienced dysphagia, mostly mild.
  • Nutritional status in Parkinson's disease patients was comparable to controls.
  • Disease duration and severity correlated with dysphagia severity.
  • Tremor and speech disturbances predicted dysphagia.

Conclusions:

  • Dysphagia is highly prevalent in Parkinson's disease, though often mild.
  • Nutritional status is not significantly impacted by mild dysphagia in this cohort.
  • Motor and speech symptoms are key indicators for dysphagia risk in Parkinson's disease.
