    Background:

    • In vitro studies suggest a serum factor may contribute to motor neuron disease pathogenesis.
    • Plasmapheresis, a blood filtration technique, is explored as a potential therapeutic intervention for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the efficacy of plasmapheresis in altering the disease course of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).

    Main Methods:

    • A total of 14 ALS patients were involved, with 7 undergoing weekly plasma exchanges using a Haemonetics blood separator.
    • A control group of 7 matched ALS patients received no treatment.
    • Disease progression was monitored using a grading system, dynamometry, motor speed tests, coordination assessments, and pulmonary function tests over 6 to 15 months.

    Main Results:

    • Monthly evaluations revealed no significant difference in the rate of disease deterioration between the plasmapheresis treatment group and the control group.
    • The study found that plasmapheresis, as administered, did not positively influence the progression of ALS.

    Conclusions:

    • Weekly plasmapheresis treatment does not appear to modify the clinical progression of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).
    • Further research may be needed to explore alternative therapeutic strategies or modifications to plasmapheresis for ALS treatment.
