Selective catheter ablation of the slow atrioventricular nodal pathway for atrial fibrillation
1Department of Medicine, Groote Schuur Hospital.
Abstract:
The slow AV nodal pathway was ablated selectively in a 62-year-old man with uncontrolled rapid atrial fibrillation. This resulted in a much slower ventricular response without the need for permanent pacing. The pathophysiology is discussed.
Insights
Ablating the slow atrioventricular (AV) nodal pathway successfully controlled rapid atrial fibrillation. This intervention slowed the ventricular response without requiring a permanent pacemaker.

- Cardiology
- Electrophysiology
- Medical Devices
Background:
- Atrial fibrillation (AF) is a common arrhythmia leading to rapid ventricular rates.
- Uncontrolled AF can cause significant morbidity and requires effective treatment strategies.
