Summary

Transdermal nicotine patch (TNP) significantly improved smoking cessation rates at two months compared to placebo. However, achieving sustained, long-term abstinence remains a challenge despite advancements in nicotine replacement therapy.

Area of Science:

  • Behavioral Science
  • Pharmacology
  • Public Health

Background:

  • Smoking cessation remains a significant public health challenge.
  • Nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) is a common intervention.
  • Optimizing NRT and behavioral support is crucial for long-term success.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy of transdermal nicotine patch (TNP) combined with different self-help behavioral treatments for smoking cessation.
  • To determine the impact of TNP and behavioral interventions on short-term and long-term abstinence rates.

Main Methods:

  • A randomized 2x2 factorial trial involving 424 smokers.
  • Interventions included TNP (21 mg) or placebo, and a video-enhanced self-help manual or a standard self-help manual.
  • Abstinence and relapse were assessed over 12 months.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • TNP significantly increased abstinence rates at 2 months (36%) compared to placebo (20%, p < .001).
  • No significant differences were found for behavioral interventions or their combination with TNP.
  • Higher compliance with TNP was associated with reduced relapse at 2, 6, and 12 months.

Conclusions:

  • TNP is effective in improving short-term smoking cessation rates.
  • Sustained abstinence remains difficult to achieve, indicating a need for further research.
  • Compliance with NRT is a key factor in preventing relapse.
