Summary

Patients recovering from poststreptococcal glomerulonephritis (PSGN) show significantly reduced renal functional reserve (RFR) years later. This impaired kidney function, particularly evident over a decade post-infection, highlights potential long-term renal consequences of PSGN.

Background:

  • Poststreptococcal glomerulonephritis (PSGN) is a common childhood kidney disease.
  • Long-term renal sequelae after PSGN are not fully understood.
  • Assessing renal functional reserve (RFR) can reveal subclinical kidney impairment.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate renal functional reserve (RFR) in children and adolescents who previously had PSGN.
  • To compare RFR in PSGN patients with a control group of healthy children.
  • To investigate the relationship between time since PSGN recovery and RFR.

Main Methods:

  • Study included 36 patients (aged 5-21 years) with a history of PSGN and 12 healthy controls.
  • Renal functional reserve (RFR) was assessed using protein loading tests.

    • The degree of RFR reduction appears to correlate with the time elapsed since PSGN recovery.
