Background:

  • Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an autoimmune disease affecting the central nervous system.
  • Glucocorticoids are commonly used to manage MS, but treatment responses vary significantly.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the mitogenic response and steroid sensitivity of lymphocytes in MS patients.
  • To determine if lymphocytes from MS patients exhibit reduced responsiveness to steroids compared to healthy individuals.

Main Methods:

  • Compared mitogenic response to phytohaemagglutinin (PHA) in lymphocytes from MS patients and healthy controls.
  • Assessed the inhibitory effects of dexamethasone (DEX) on PHA-stimulated lymphocytes.
  • Analyzed correlations between steroid sensitivity and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings, as well as endogenous cortisol levels.

  • The variability in steroid response observed in MS patients may be attributed to inherent differences in glucocorticoid sensitivity.
  • These findings suggest that individual variations in lymphocyte steroid sensitivity contribute to the diverse clinical responses to steroid therapy in MS.
