Area of Science:

  • Gastroenterology
  • Surgical Pathology

Background:

  • Heterotopic pancreas is the presence of pancreatic tissue outside its normal location.
  • Gallbladder wall heterotopia is an extremely rare form of this condition.

Observation:

  • Three female patients presented with abdominal pain and gallbladder abnormalities.
  • Ultrasonography showed polypoid tumors, with gallstones present in two cases.
  • All patients underwent cholecystectomy for diagnosis and treatment.

Findings:

  • Microscopic examination confirmed chronic cholecystitis, cholesteatosis, and heterotopic pancreatic tissue within the gallbladder wall.
  • This represents a rare finding, with only 23 prior international literature reports.

Implications:

  • Highlights the importance of considering rare diagnoses in cases of unexplained abdominal pain.
  • Adds to the limited understanding and case reports of gallbladder heterotopic pancreas.
  • Underscores the role of surgical pathology in diagnosing rare gastrointestinal anomalies.
