Summary

Statins like lovastatin and pravastatin significantly lower coenzyme Q10 (ubiquinone) levels in hypercholesterolemic patients. This decline is dose-related and more pronounced with lovastatin, suggesting monitoring is important during long-term statin therapy.

Background:

  • Coenzyme Q10 (ubiquinone) is a vital mitochondrial redox component and antioxidant.
  • It is transported within LDL + VLDL cholesterol fractions.
  • Coenzyme Q10 is theorized to be an anti-atherosclerotic factor via the oxidative stress theory.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the effect of statin therapy on serum coenzyme Q10 levels.
  • To compare the impact of lovastatin and pravastatin on coenzyme Q10 levels.
  • To assess the dose-dependency of statin-induced coenzyme Q10 reduction.

Main Methods:

  • A double-blind, randomized trial involving 45 hypercholesterolemic patients.
  • Patients received escalating doses of either lovastatin (20-80 mg/day) or pravastatin (10-40 mg/day) for 18 weeks.
