Summary

Post-laparoscopic surgery pneumoperitoneum typically resolves within 7 days for most patients. Bile spillage during surgery significantly shortens this resolution time, but shoulder pain does not correlate with pneumoperitoneum duration.

Background:

  • Abdominal pain after laparoscopic surgery presents a diagnostic challenge when pneumoperitoneum is present.
  • The duration of post-laparoscopic pneumoperitoneum is not well-defined.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To define the resolution time of laparoscopic pneumoperitoneum.
  • To identify factors influencing pneumoperitoneum resolution.

Main Methods:

  • Followed 57 patients undergoing laparoscopic cholecystectomy, herniorraphy, or appendectomy.
  • Serial abdominal films were used to track residual pneumoperitoneum resolution.

Main Results:

  • 81% of patients resolved pneumoperitoneum within 3 days; 96% within 7 days.
