Summary

This study reports the first known cases of nonpigmented dysplastic melanocytic nevi (DMN). These nonpigmented lesions share histologic features with pigmented DMN, highlighting the need for their inclusion in differential diagnoses.

Global dermatology: challenges and changes?

Background:

  • Dysplastic melanocytic nevi (DMN) are precursors to melanoma.
  • Typical DMN present with irregular borders, >5mm size, erythema, and varied colors.

Observation:

  • A case series of a patient with numerous nonpigmented macules and papules.
  • Lesions were 2-5mm in diameter and distributed on the trunk.
  • Microscopic analysis revealed atypical intraepidermal melanocytes.

Findings:

  • The study identified uniformly nonpigmented DMN.
  • These nonpigmented lesions exhibited histologic characteristics similar to pigmented DMN.
  • This represents the first reported cases of nonpigmented DMN.
