Area of Science:

  • Phytochemistry
  • Natural Products Chemistry
  • Pharmacology

Background:

  • Salvia glutinosa is a plant species known for its diverse chemical constituents.
  • Steroidal compounds and triterpenoids are classes of natural products with potential biological activities.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To isolate and characterize novel and known compounds from Salvia glutinosa.
  • To evaluate the cytotoxic activity of isolated compounds against specific cancer cell lines.

Main Methods:

  • Phytochemical investigation of Salvia glutinosa whole plant extract.
  • Structure elucidation using comprehensive spectral data (e.g., NMR, MS).
  • In vitro cytotoxic assays using P-388 and KB cell lines.

Main Results:

  • Isolation of a new steroidal compound: 1-oxo-7 alpha-hydroxysitosterol.
  • Identification of 11 known triterpenoids and three known steroids.
  • The new compound and 7 alpha-hydroxysitosterol exhibited only marginal cytotoxic activity.

Conclusions:

  • Salvia glutinosa is a source of diverse steroidal and triterpenoid compounds.
  • The newly isolated compound 1-oxo-7 alpha-hydroxysitosterol does not show significant cytotoxic potential in preliminary tests.
