    Summary

Cancer incidence and survival rates changed between 1964 and 1974, with increased mortality in younger and older patients. Survival rates improved, particularly for lymphoid-myeloid tumors.

    Area of Science:

    • Oncology
    • Pathology
    • Epidemiology

    Context:

    • Retrospective analysis of 260 patient records from the Institute of Oncology, Hungary, in 1974.
    • Comparison with data from 1964 to identify trends in cancer patient demographics and outcomes.

    Purpose:

    • To analyze changes in cancer patient demographics, tumor types, treatment efficacy, and survival rates over a decade.
    • To evaluate diagnostic accuracy and identify common complications and contributing factors to mortality.

    Summary:

    • Observed an increase in cancer deaths among patients younger than 30 and older than 70 years.
    • Lymphoid-myeloid system tumors were most frequent, followed by breast and urogenital tract tumors.
    • Primary multiplex tumors increased from 1.5% to 5.5%; diagnostic discrepancies occurred in 35.9% of cases.
    • Pneumonia was the most common unrecognized complication.
    • Surgical treatment showed highest efficacy for breast cancer.
    • Five-year survival rates improved by 3.7%, notably for lymphoid-myeloid tumors.

    Impact:

    • Suggests a better prognosis for older cancer patients.
    • Highlights the need for improved diagnostic accuracy and management of complications in oncology.
    • Indicates a positive trend in cancer survival rates over the studied period.
