Summary

The motion perception (MP) test effectively identifies primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG), even in early stages. This new diagnostic tool shows high abnormality rates in POAG patients, correlating with disease severity.

Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Neuroscience
  • Visual Science

Background:

  • Primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) is a leading cause of irreversible blindness.
  • Early diagnosis of POAG is crucial for effective management and vision preservation.
  • Current diagnostic methods may not always detect subtle early-stage visual field defects.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the characteristics of motion perception (MP) in patients with POAG.
  • To evaluate the clinical utility of the MP test for diagnosing POAG.
  • To determine the correlation between MP abnormalities and glaucoma severity indicators.

Main Methods:

  • Motion perception was assessed using specialized software on a PC.
  • MP data were collected from 67 eyes of 41 POAG patients and 112 eyes of 56 healthy controls.

Related Experiment Videos

  • MP parameters were analyzed and compared with clinical and visual function indices.
  • Main Results:

    • A high overall MP abnormality rate of 89.5% was observed in POAG patients.
    • Early-stage POAG showed an 81.6% MP abnormality rate.
    • MP abnormalities correlated positively with cup-to-disc ratio, ocular tension, and corrected loss variance, and negatively with visual acuity and mean sensitivity.

    Conclusions:

    • The motion perception test is a promising new method for diagnosing early POAG.
    • MP testing offers a sensitive approach to detecting visual dysfunction in glaucoma.
    • MP assessment can provide valuable information complementary to existing glaucoma diagnostic tools.
