Background:

  • Polyethylene glycol (PEG) is used to study sodium intake by reducing extracellular fluid (ECF) sodium.
  • It is hypothesized that PEG may also affect ECF calcium levels, influencing calcium intake.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate if PEG administration induces a calcium appetite in rats.
  • To explore the physiological mechanisms underlying PEG-induced mineral intake.

Main Methods:

  • Male Sprague-Dawley rats were given two-bottle choice tests with various taste solutions and water after PEG injection.
  • Plasma mineral concentrations and hormone levels were measured 24 hours post-injection.

Main Results:

  • PEG-injected rats showed significantly increased intake of low to moderate concentrations of calcium (CaCl2, calcium lactate) and strontium chloride solutions.
  • Increased intake was also observed for concentrated NaCl and KHCO3, but not for KCl, NH4Cl, AlCl3, FeCl2, or high concentration CaCl2.
  • Plasma ionized calcium levels decreased, while parathyroid hormone and calcitonin levels increased post-PEG injection.

  • Polyethylene glycol (PEG) treatment induces a specific appetite for calcium and sodium in rats.
  • Reduced plasma ionized calcium and altered hormone levels suggest a role for calcium homeostasis disruption.
  • PEG's effect extends beyond sodium, influencing calcium intake regulation.
