Effects of exogenous surfactant on neonates supported by extracorporeal membrane oxygenation

Objective:
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the impact of exogenous surfactant on the duration of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation needed to support neonates.
Study Design:
Retrospective case review.
Results:
The duration of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation decreased from 112 +/- 43.3 hours to 76 +/- 17.9 hours. There was no difference in duration of mechanical ventilation, duration of supplemental oxygen, incidence of chronic lung disease, or length of hospital stay.
Conclusion:
Surfactant administered soon after initiation of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation results in a significant reduction in the duration of extracorporeal support for neonates.
