Lupus·2015

Area of Science:

  • Immunology
  • Pediatrics
  • Obstetrics

Background:

  • Neonatal lupus erythematosus (NLE) is a rare condition affecting newborns.
  • It is characterized by specific clinical manifestations and the presence of maternal autoantibodies.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To discuss the pathogenesis and clinical features of neonatal lupus erythematosus.
  • To highlight the role of maternal autoantibodies in NLE.

Main Methods:

  • Review of existing literature on neonatal lupus erythematosus.
  • Analysis of clinical case reports and immunological findings.

Main Results:

  • NLE is defined by maternal autoantibodies and neonatal clinical features.
  • Maternal autoantibodies, typically IgG, are transmitted to the fetus.
  • Tissue damage in the neonate is attributed to these maternally derived autoantibodies.

Conclusions:

  • Neonatal lupus erythematosus results from maternally transmitted IgG autoantibodies.
  • The condition can occur even when the mother shows no clinical signs of autoimmune disease.
