1Department of Emergency Medicine, Mount Sinai School of Medicine, NY 10029, USA.
Insights
Early recognition and intervention significantly reduce mortality from acute myocardial infarction (heart attack). Prompt emergency physician action and appropriate therapeutic choices are crucial for effective management and improved patient outcomes.
Area of Science:
- Cardiology
- Emergency Medicine
- Public Health
Background:
- Myocardial infarction (heart attack) remains a leading cause of adult death in the US.
- Despite advances, effective management relies on timely recognition and intervention.
Purpose of the Study:
- To summarize recent progress in acute myocardial infarction management.
- To review current and emerging treatment options for emergency physicians.
Main Methods:
- Review of prehospital care strategies.
- Analysis of emergency department diagnostic challenges.
- Evaluation of conventional and pharmacologic therapies.
- Assessment of interventional measures and future trends.
Main Results:
- Aggressive strategies focusing on early recognition and intervention have reduced mortality.
- A wide range of therapeutic options are available, requiring appropriate selection by emergency physicians.
Conclusions:
- Prompt and informed decision-making by emergency physicians is vital for managing acute myocardial infarction.
- Continued advancements in treatment offer improved outcomes for heart attack patients.
Abstract:
Myocardial infarction-remains one of the leading causes of death among adults in the United States despite the significant advances in therapy made during the past three decades. However, a significant reduction in mortality following acute myocardial infarction has been accomplished through an aggressive strategy directed toward early recognition and intervention. This approach requires that the emergency physician act promptly and choose appropriately from the ever-expanding therapeutic options. This paper summarizes the recent progress and treatment options in the management of acute myocardial infarction with regard to prehospital care, diagnostic challenges in the emergency department, conventional therapy and pharmacologic advances, newer interventional measures, and future trends.
